London’s Lost Diesels Dvd

Description

Looking at various diesel motive power which were to be seen working in and around London over many years.

Starting with scenes of the trade exhibition held at London Marylebone where British Railway unveiled new diesel locomotives that were to be introduced.

Among the new introductions we glimpse the prototype Deltic locomotive at London Kings Cross plus newly introduced Class 42 Warship’s and Class 52 Western Diesel Hydraulics working services on the Great Western lines.

Then a look at suburban services out of London Marylebone worked by diesel multiple units.

Diesel multiple units are also shown working alongside Class 31 locomotive hauled suburban services in and out of London Kings Cross.

Afterwards we watch a rail tour departing from London Kings Cross hauled by Class 55 Deltic locomotive 55015 ‘Tulyar’ followed by many Class 52 Western diesel hydraulic locomotives awaiting scrap at Swindon.

One of the class which were saved D1013 ‘Western Ranger’ is shown on an enthusiast rail tour.

A trip to goods yard at Feltham shows class 08 diesel locomotives undertaking shunting duties.

Following is footage from 1986 of an exhibition held at London Cannon Street.

Then action at Stratford with class 47 locomotives as well as being stabled awaiting next duties at the nearby Stratford Depot.

Further action features London Waterloo with a variety of classes such as 33s, 50s and 73s.

Also see class 25s on London Underground stock moves from Ruislip.

These workings are also shown among the many services operated with class 20s.

Cross London freight action is shown at Barking with a further feature with class 165 diesel multiple units in their first day of service out of London Marylebone.

More diesel multiple units features includes operation between Gospel Oak and Barking as well as between Ealing Broadway and Greenford.

Next are scenes of 1994 with a shuttle service operating to Chesham with class 121 bubble car.

A look at class 56s on Merry Go Round freight trains at Ealing Broadway and more freight action at Clapham Junction and Kensington Olympia.

Also from 1994 we take a brief look around Old Oak Common depot showing locomotives waiting to be scrapped.

Final feature on the DVD is class 47 hauled travelling Post Office train working from London to Dover Priory.

Diesel locomotives have been a common sight on London’s railways for over thirty years, taking over from the traditional steam engine.

Starting with the LMS 10000 pioneer, we study most of the early diesels in service.

Ordered in haste by British Rail, some are seen at a trade exhibition held at Marylebone station in 1961 and of the B.T.H. machine used at Fords, Dagenham, of 1932 and now preserved.

In service the ex-Great Western Railway AEC railcars and the 3 car British United Traction experimental diesel units used on the Harrow – Belmont branch, but seen on this dvd on the Bricket Wood line.

The Class 31’s dipped down the widened lines at Kings Cross (York Road station) to reach Moorgate.

An 08 shunts at Feltham yards.

We take a cab ride in the prototype Deltic.

The Western Region chose to take on a fleet of Diesel-Hydraulic engines.

The Warships, Hymeks and the elegant Western class 52.

Next an in-depth coverage of their intensive use around London.

Goods trains to Norwood, expresses to the West.

Our cameraman visits Old Oak Common, Swindon and films the very last workings out of Paddington in 1977.

Another much loved machine, the Deltic receives the full treatment too, finishing with the last scheduled run from King’s Cross.

At Stratford depot and station we find diesels in action.

Steam disappears from Marylebone and DMUs take over.

The Cannon Street station exhibition of 1986 has a selection of diesels on show including those favoured by the Southern Region – Class 33s and 73s in action at Waterloo.

Withdrawn tube stock departs Ruislip by a Class 25.

Class 20s slip through with nuclear waste trains.

Marylebone gets new Turbos.

Gospel Oak – Barking loses its DMUs.

DMUs at Greenford and Chesham.

Clapham sees Class 37s on duty.

The Gatwick Express still has Class 73s in use.

Willesden has rebuilt 47s and 57s on shed.

A variety of locomotives pass, including the travelling Post Office usually hauled by class 73s, but sometimes other classes.

The Post Office trains stopped running in 2003 and we finish with a study of its journey to Dover.

This programme will be much loved by diesel enthusiast.
