The route across the Pennines via Barnard Castle and Bowes with steam hauled service trains is explored along with scenes at Kirkby Stephen East, West and Junction and the viaducts at Lartington and Belah.

A trip is taken by DMU on the last day of the Middleton in Teesdale service.

Filmed from 1962, all types of trains from freight to express passenger, the majority of which are lineside shots, are depicted.

Included are a few enthusiasts specials with some interesting locomotives and some depot scenes.

Classes filmed include various Midland and Standard types along with WDs, A4, A3, A2/3, A1, V2, V3, B1, B16, B16/2, B16/3, K1, K3, J21, J27, J72, J94, Q6, Q7, 01, 02, 04/7, 04/8 and ES1.
