A Train Spotter’s Notebook Dvd – Volume Three – Waterloo to Weymouth via Woking, Guildford, Basingstoke, Southampton Docks and the Isle of Wight.

Volume One of the Train Spotter’s Notebook series travelled to Scotland and Volume Two from Salisbury to the West Country and over the Somerset and Dorset.

We now travel over the last steam hauled express route from Waterloo to Weymouth with some interesting diversions.

Shortly after leaving Waterloo, steam is observed near Esher on engineers trains and the first stop-off is at Woking.

A variety of Bullied Pacifics and Standard Classes are seen on all types of trains along with an N Class number 31408 on a van train.

The next location visited is Guildford, in a snow storm.

Lurking in the shed and shed yard are representatives of Class N, Q1, a Bullied Pacific and the shed pilot, a U.S.A. Class along with the odd Standard.

A boat train diverted off the Bournemouth line passes through the station.

Returning to Woking we see the passage of a number of boat trains and service trains.

So it’s on to the footplate for a ride along the L.S.W.R. main line.

Basingstoke witnesses the passage of Pacifics and Standard Classes.

The latter are represented in the shed yard, along with a Black 5. Eastleigh produces many interesting locomotives and passenger and freight services along with light engines to and from the shed including steam coming to the rescue of a failed Class 47!

A brief visit to the shed is made.

The Ocean Liner Terminal in Southampton Docks sees the arrival and departure of boat trains.

Time is spent at Southampton Central where the Pines Express is seen departing before travelling via Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight and a trip to Cowes and Ventnor.

Starting out again from Millbrook a stop-over is made at Brockenhurst for a trip down the Lymington branch behind a Q1 and returning with a Standard tank before arrival at Bournemouth Central.

Time is spent at the station and in the shed before visiting Branksome with main line workings and empty coaching stock and light engine movements to and from Bournemouth West.

A Black 5 arrives on a 15 coach 08.30am Newcastle to Poole.

Several movements are seen at Poole. Some time is spent at Upwey and Broadwey on a Summer Saturday with double headers and bankers slogging up the climb towards Bincombe Tunnel with heavily laden holiday trains including Black 5s with through workings to the Midlands.

Clun Castle appears on a special as does a Black 5 And a West Country on a special that leads us to the final section of the journey, the through working of this train to Weymouth Quay.

The shed at Weymouth is not forgotten showing the variety of locomotives then available.
