£20.99

Description

Description

Hampshire was once the home of a fascinating railway system. It had numerous junctions, sidings and marshalling yards as well as its own motive power fleet. Its purpose was to train British Military personnel in the operation of railways. This was the Longmoor Military Railway which officially closed in 1969.

Origins: A history of the railway from the turn of the 20th Century, through the First and Second World Wars right up until closure in 1969.

The Railway Explored: David Powell takes us on a tour of the system, starting at Liss using mostly archive film and running to Longmoor Downs and its yards and junctions. We then explore the Hollywater Loop and the branch to Bordon.

The Motive Power: The steam and diesel fleet through the years, including the latter-day stalwarts of the railway 2-10-0 ‘Gordon’ and 0-6-0 Saddle Tank ‘Errol Lonsdale’ in addition to diesel power and ‘Lord Robertson’.

Austerity Locomotives: A type closely associated with the railway, with archive footage of 2-8-0s & 2-10-0s as well as the many 0-6-0 Saddle Tanks. Includes footage from the MOD lines at Bicester and Long Marston.

Survivors: Narrow Gauge loco ‘Gazelle’ on the Kent & East Sussex Railway plus a S100 tank and coaching stock.

Railtours: Specials to the railway in 1966 featuring 2-10-0 ‘Gordon’ on the main line and trains on the Bordon branch.

After the End: The final years of the railway and its role as a preservation centre.

Open Days: Extensive coverage of the final open days in 1967, 1968 & 1969. Includes main line movements with 75029 & 9F 92203, 34023 ‘Blackmore Vale’, Ivatt Tank 41298 as well as the railways resident fleet.
