Carlisle is an important railway centre, standing at the hub of the West Coast route to Scotland.

Class 86, 87, 90, 92, electrics and Class 37, 57, 66, 67 diesel haulage is included on all the major workings.
Carlisle in 2004: With Class 37s on workings to Leeds and Scotland and the end of Virgin loco haulage.
Carlisle in the 1990s: With Class 56, 47, 37, 87, 86 and 60 haulage.
Carlisle in the 1980s: With a wide range of workings in and around the station on passenger and freight.
