Description

The Midland Main Line from St. Pancras to Bedford in the 1970s.

In the mid-1970s the Midland Main Line from St Pancras to Bedford had changed little since the days of steam.

With a wealth of delightful original stations, signal boxes and semaphores.

This programme explores the route in the years after steam and before electrification and features everything from express passenger, to freight services together with the dedicated Class 127 diesel multiple units.

The programme comprises:

St Pancras to Cricklewood: ‘Peak’ hauled passenger services and diesel multiple units working from the Midlands ‘Gateway to the North’ through West Hampstead to the yards and junctions at Cricklewood.

Through Hertfordshire: Freight and passenger services including Class 25s on the route through Elstree to Napsbury and St Albans.

Into Bedfordshire: The approaches to Luton and its station with a variety of freight and passenger workings. Plus the line north to Leagrave and Harlington.

Bedford: The station and its surroundings.

The 1980s: Class 45s, 25s, 33s and 31s on a variety of workings.

The 1990s to the present day: Class 33s, 47s, 37s, 20s, 58s and Class 31s on passenger and freight.

Approx. 60 minutes.
