Description

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway first opened in 1836 as the Whitby and Pickering Railway.

The railway was first planned in 1831 by George Stephenson as a means of opening up trade routes inland from the then important seaport of Whitby.

The railway was first designed and built to be used by horse-drawn carriages.

In 1845, the railway was acquired by the York and North Midland Railway who re-engineered the line to allow the use of steam locomotives.

They also constructed the permanent stations and other structures along the line which still remain today.

Dr Beeching declared that the Whitby-Pickering line was uneconomic and listed it for closure, which took place in 1965.

In 1967, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Preservation Society was formed and negotiations began for the purchase of the line.

After running various Open Weekends and Steam Galas during the early 1970s the NYMRPS transformed itself into a Charitable Trust and became The North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd.

The railway was able to reopen for running in 1973 as the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

Today, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the UK’s top preserved railways carrying over 350,000 passengers a year!

As well as being one of the UK’s longest preserved railways, running a staggering eighteen miles from Pickering to Grosmont with some services continuing to coastal town of Whitby.

Steam trains run frequently calling at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt, Goathland and Grosmont passing through picturesque scenery across the North Yorkshire Moorland.

Since tourist trains started running in 1973 many steam engines have ran at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, this DVD focuses on several little and large engines that have graced their presence along the eighteen mile route over the past few years.

This DVD features several of those engines slogging their hearts out up the 1 in 49 gradient from Grosmont to Goathland and passing through the beautiful scenery the railway has to offer.
