However, replacements were on the way and by the early 1990s a whole new generation of units had been introduced.
This programme explores the new DMU fleet using archive film and footage from around the network, from Scotland to the West Country.

Class 144: ‘Pacers’ with film from Yorkshire.
Class 150: ‘Sprinters’ soon after their introduction to service and footage on a wide variety of workings from East Anglia, to South Wales, the Peak District and the North West.
Class 153: Single car units on branch line duties.
Class 155: 2 car units.
Class 156: ‘Super Sprinter’ including archive film and coverage from around the network, including Scotland.
Class 158: Express units including a test run in 1989, archive film and footage from 2012 including Scotland.
