If you liked ex-LNER Pacifics, then Doncaster was the place to see them.

At speed and stationary, ex-works and work-stained, on top link passenger trains and lowly freight trains, on shed and in the works, there was always a ‘Pacific’ on view.

Whether it was Class A1, A2, A3 or A4: they all looked impressive.

In this programme we see nineteen different Class A4, eleven different Class A3, twenty-three different Class A1, six different Class A2, five Britannias, a Stanier Coronation and eleven Deltics!

Mixed traffic and freight locos featured include Class B1, J50, K1, K3, N2, O1, O2, V2, WD and early classes of diesels.

Doncaster’s ‘plant’ and shed area are visited and together with lineside scenes  at Retford, Rossington and Hatfield combine to make a programme that is pure nostalgia.

Filmed and recorded between 1959 and 1965.

Between 1959 and 1968, railway enthusiast and cine-cameraman, Michael Marsden, recorded views and sounds of the rapidly changing face of Britain’s rail network.

For over twenty-five years after steam ended, he captivated audiences throughout the country with his unique film collection that captured steams’ last decade and the full emergence of the diesel locomotive.

The blending of this film and that of other cameramen with true sounds of the era, plus an informative narrative, has resulted in the creation of a superb range of railway programmes detailing the last decade of British mainline steam operations.
