Description

Amateur footage.

Mail Trains Volume One was filmed during a significant period in the history of Britain’s railways, namely the privatisation of British Rail which began in 1994, and was completed by 1997.

At the time all Travelling Post Office (TPO) and mail trains were operated by Rail Express Systems (RES), before being handed over to their successor English Welsh & Scottish Railways (EWS).

This double DVD depicts the variety of traction that could still be seen working parcel and TPO services, which at the time were still dominated by RES Class 47s.

Under the wires on the East Coast Main Lines (ECML) and West Coast Main Lines (WCML), we see a variety of Class 86 and 90 locomotives and following their introduction in 1996 the then new Class 325 electric multiple units.

Many locations feature including: Newport, Didcot, Stafford, Cardiff, Water Orton, Norton Bridge (now closed), Willesden, Peterborough, Derby, Rugby and more.

Approx. 90 minutes.
