First Generation Traction DVD

Description

A range of veteran motive power from the 1950s and 60s at work throughout the network.

During the 1950s and 1960s, British Railways introduced a wide range of diesel and electric traction which would, by 1968, completely displace steam from the network. Amazingly, in the 21st Century, some of those first generation classes are still hard at work.

In this programme, filmed mostly in 2002, we explore these classes in action on a wide range of duties.

The programme comprises:

Class 37s on both passenger and freight, including double heading on stone trains on the steep Devon bank to Whiteball.

DRS Class 20s and Fragonset Class 47s.

The Class 101 Metro Cammel Units.

Virgin and First North Western Class 47s.

‘Celebrity’ 47s including Virgins two tone green, large logo and XP64 liveries.

DEMUs and EMUs on former Southern metals plus Class 73s.

Class 86s on both passenger and freight.

Freightliner Class 47s and 86s.

Diverted trains over the Settle & Carlisle with a wide range of Class 47 motive power.
