The Class 20s are perhaps the most unusual and distinctive of the locomotive designs introduced as a result of the Modernisation Plan of 1955.

In this programme made in the late 1980s we take a look at the class on both passenger and freight traffic.

A History of the Class: With a brief look at the competing Type 1 designs of the period with rare film of Class 15s at Kings Cross. Early Pilot Scheme examples are also included.

Class 20s on Passenger Traffic: On the Skegness line and on the Derby to Crewe and Derby to Matlock lines.

Class 20s on Freight and Special Duties: Including the Class 20/9s on weed killing duties. This section includes extensive coverage of the 20s in and around their home base, Toton.

Class 20s in the North West: Including coal duties.
