The final weeks of steam-hauled passenger services on the Southern Region of British Railways are remembered in this special programme.

It was on 9th July 1967 that steam finally retired from the main line between London Waterloo to Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth.

From rare archive films taken in the closing weeks and months, we see the last services, including the ‘Bournemouth Belle’, which was steam-hauled almost to the very end.

We speak to Driver Stan Symes from Dorset about his thoughts on the final workings from Bournemouth and to David Shepherd who bought engines from BR towards the end of steam.

Tony Clare of the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society explains how their locomotive No. 35028 Clan Line was selected and purchased in 1967.

We end with a review of events that took place at the Swanage and Mid-Hants railways to commemorate the end.
