Description

The London North Eastern Railway Company is where the ‘Scarborough Spa Express’ originated.

In 1927 the LNER inaugurated ‘The Scarborough Flier’ running from London Kings Cross to Scarborough and Whitby.

This popular train with families continued until 1939 when many trains like this were suspended because of the war.

It wasn’t until 1950 when the train was re-introduced as a ‘Summer Only’ express and became known as ‘The Scarborough Flyer’.

Due to falling passenger numbers the train ceased to run after 1963.

1981 saw the first ‘The Scarborough Spa Express’ service running to celebrate the opening of the famous spa building.

These trains only continued to run till 1985 due to low passenger figures.

It wasn’t until 2007 that ‘The Scarborough Spa Express’ came back to life with services once again running to the famous Yorkshire coast.

This programme features footage from 2008-2013 including the two routes that the train has taken over this time:

The Harrogate Loop (2007-2009): York – Knaresborough – Harrogate – Leeds – York – Scarborough.

When the service was re-introduced in 2007 the train picked up on the Harrogate loop before heading back to York and onwards to Scarborough.

The Harrogate loop is famous for its steep gradients, tight curves and magnificent structures which proved a hit amongst enthusiasts and the general public.

The Wakefield Loop (2010-2013): York – Castleford – Wakefield – York – Scarborough.

In 2010, the train was re-routed mainly due to pathing issues and the use of larger engines.

Since 2010 ‘The Scarborough Spa Express’ has ran around the Wakefield loop picking up from Castleford, Normanton, Wakefield and Woodlesford.

Many of the steep gradients, tight curves and magnificent structures were lost although some beautiful scenery was on offer around areas such as Burton Salmon, Ullekself and many others.

Since 2008 a whole range of steam engines have been used including:
