Description

The London Midland and Scottish Railway’s Class 5 4-6-0, nicknamed as the ‘Black Five’, was introduced by William Stanier in 1934.

Between 1934 and 1951 842 were built.

Members of the class survived to the last day of steam on British Railways in 1968, and eighteen were preserved with many of them still running at heritage railways and on the mainline around the UK during the 21st Century.

The Class 5 engine proved very popular with crews and could be seen hauling services along the LMS network including both passenger and freight trains.

The engines proved to be ideal engines for several different routes.

The engines were built at several sites around the country including LMS Crewe Works, LMS Derby Works, LMS Horwich Works, Vulcan Foundry and Armstrong Whitworth.

Several of the Black 5’s played their part on the final day of steam in 1968 with LMS 5MT 44871 hauling ‘The 15 Guinea Special’.

The IT57 ‘Fifteen Guinea Special’ was the last main-line passenger train to be hauled by steam locomotive power on British Railways on 11 August 1968 before the introduction of a steam ban that started the following day.

It was a special rail tour excursion train organised for the occasion from Liverpool via Manchester to Carlisle and back. LMS 5MT 44871 recently returned to steam and is featured at several different locations around the UK.

There were a number of detail variations in the locomotives and they did not all remain in the same condition as built.

Some locomotives built under British Railways administration were used as test beds for various design modifications with a view to incorporating the successful modifications in the Standard Classes of locomotives built from 1951 onwards.

These modifications included outside Caprotti valve gear, roller bearings on the coupled and tender axles in varying combinations and an experimental steel firebox.

After been withdrawn from service in 1968 eighteen were saved for preservation this dvd features footage of several of them at several points on the mainline.

So sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of the famous Black 5 locomotives working around the country including hauling ‘The Jacobite’, storming over Shap and the Settle & Carlisle Railway, North Norfolk Railway, North Yorkshire Moors Railway, East Lancashire Railway, Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, Churnet Valley Railway plus many others too.
