Cab Ride Dvd: Maidstone West to London Bridge

This colour official dvd, was filmed in association with our other productions in connection with ‘A Celebration of Steam and Transport’ in Maidstone during August 1999. Join the Driver of Unit 508 204 for an uninterrupted cab ride from Maidstone West to London Bridge taking the original South Eastern Railway route via Redhill.

The journey commences under Handsignalman control - Maidstone West Signalbox is being refurbished and then it’s off along the scenic Medway Valley Line with its quaint level crossings and semaphore signalling.

The train calls at East Farleigh, Wateringbury, Yalding, Beltring and Paddock Wood – where a transformation takes place to that of a Class A Eurostar route where one is seen in full cry on its way to the Continent.

A quick dash up the main line brings us to Tonbridge were we branch off for an all stations run to Redhill.

After leaving there, it’s fast to East Croydon and London Bridge, where in complete contrast to the start of the journey, 508 204 negotiates Thames link, Gatwick Expresses and other Companies trains for its hectic run via Norwood Junction. Green: Double yellow: single yellow and red signals – all contriving to make the journey as difficult as possible.

Finally and on time, we come to a stand in the former ‘Central Division’ terminus at London Bridge.

An authoritative and well balanced commentary describes the history, present locations and signalling of the route.
