Southern Region Journey Dvd

A journey through the Southern Region of British Railways from the 1960s to the 1980s.

To many the end of steam on the Southern Region in 1967 marked the end of an era.

However, alongside a fascinating range of motive power, from the unique Hastings Units to ‘Cromptons’, Class 74s continued to work a wide range of traffic.

In this programme we explore this variety and a number of traditionally signalled main and branch lines during the 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s.

This programme includes:

The ‘Hastings Units’ on the line through Hastings to Ashford in the 1980s.

Includes the units hard at work on the line from Hastings to Tonbridge.

The branch from Tunbridge Wells to Eridge with DEMUs in operation prior to the withdrawal of services in 1985.

Includes a detailed look at Tunbridge Wells West and its approaches.

The fascinating branch through the South London Suburbs from Wimbledon to South Croydon complete with veteran electric multiple units.

The main line from Waterloo to Southampton in the late 1960s and early 1970s with Class 33s, Class 47s and electric units.

The branch from Winchester to Alton over what is now the Mid Hants Railway.

The line from Wareham to Weymouth with a Hymek, Class 33s and electrics.

Including a detailed look at Weymouth prior to the modernisation and electrification of the route.

The tramway to Weymouth Quay including services over the line in the 1960s.

The Bridport Branch.

The branch to Wenford Bridge.

In addition the programme takes a look at these lines past and present to provide a glimpse of the changes that have taken place over the last forty years.

Approx. 70 minutes.
