Marsden Rail .4 Dvd: Darlington

Darlington works built and repaired locomotives from 1863 to 1966 and many of the locomotives featured in this programme were built or repaired in North Road works.

Filmed between 1959 and 1967 the programme features Class J27 and Q6, together with K1, and WD plus Class 9F 2-10-0s on the Consett iron ore trains.

After looking at Class A1, A3, A4, V2 and B1 etc. on Darlington shed and in the works yard, we ride on the Richmond and Catterick Camp branches, and then watch steam in action as we move  across country to Billingham.

Boarding a DMU we travel up the coast line through Hartlepool and Sunderland to watch the numerous workings from South Dock shed.

Leaving the coast line we look at Washington and the iron ore traffic and return to Darlington via Penshaw.

Between 1959 and 1968, railway enthusiast and cine-cameraman, Michael Marsden, recorded views and sounds of the rapidly changing face of Britain’s rail network.

For over twenty-five years after steam ended, he captivated audiences throughout the country with his unique film collection that captured steams' last decade and the full emergence of the diesel locomotive.

The blending of this film and that of other cameramen with true sounds of the era, plus an informative narrative, has resulted in the creation of a superb range of railway programmes detailing the last decade of British mainline steam operations.
