Part 5: Post War Era - 1950s & 1960s

In this series of programmes we are looking at cruising during the 20th Century.

Part Five covers a period between 1955 and 1965.

Featuring four ships cruising in the Mediterranean and North to Istanbul.

All the films featured have not been used before.

By the mid-fifties some wise holiday makers were taking the opportunity to cruise once again.

A lot had changed since the late thirties, particularly in dress code, but is was still quite formal and by no means as relaxed as is the case today.

Ladies could still be seen in gloves and hats whilst visiting the shore and gentlemen still wore blazers and coats more often than not.

All of the film in this programme is sourced from amateur cine film, long locked away in attics and now reappearing in house clearances.

Joe Clark, himself was very much a part of this era at sea, being a member of the Purser’s staff on the Orient Line and P&O Ships from 1954 to 1962.

Part Five features the following ships:

Places and ports visited include:
Cannes, Crete
Malta, Monaco
Pathos, Piraeus

Narrated by Joe Clark.

Approx. 55 minutes.
