Jigsaw Puzzle: Barry Scrapyard ‘Sleeping Giants’

Barry in South Wales will always be famous because of its scrapyard of railway locomotives and rolling stock.

Visiting this wonderful place in 1964 was a truly exciting moment, for where else would you find 200 steam locomotives all together in one place?

Robin Pinnock has captured this great period at Barry Scrapyard with immense accuracy, including the rows of engines at this time.

Ex-Southern railway WC/BB Class locomotive 34072 'Manston' is waiting her fate that like 212 further engines would never take place.

Manston now resides in restored condition on the Swanage Railway in Dorset and many others are to be found on preserved lines all over the UK.

All this became possible owing to the Scrapyard proprietor the late Dai Woodham who although running a business, became involved with all those whose aim was to preserve the engines, we hope that through this painting, he and his scrapyard will never be forgotten.

Eleven million tons of Welsh coal was loaded at Barry Docks in 1913.

With trade in grain, flour and bananas it was one of the busiest ports in Britain.

By the 1970's the coal traffic had gone, and railway sidings that once flowed with prosperity were used for scrapping coal wagons, and some of the steam locomotives that had hauled them.

The rusting hulks were a magnet for enthusiasts paying illicit visits to Dai Woodham's Yard.
