B&R .80 Dvd: Southern Steam Finale, Part 8

This programme features May and June 1967 in our definitive series of Southern steam.

The Southern steam fleet was decreasing rapidly but what was left was well worth seeing.

It was superbly filmed by our cameraman at many locations between Waterloo and Weymouth.

Two railtours were operated in this period, one took 34023 to Swanage with runpasts at Corfe Castle; we had cameraman all over the place including on the trains.

4498 ‘Sir Nigel Gresley’ spent two days on the region visiting Salisbury and Weymouth, again covered in fine detail.

Steam traction in the final months of its existence in May and June 1967.

Normal workings are seen along with steam substitutions on the South Western main line from Waterloo to Weymouth via Southampton and Christchurch.

Bulleid pacifics, dirty and clean, roar about all over the place.

A visit to Guildford for a USA tank and there are Standard Class 5s on everything from ballast to Boat Trains.

Railtours include the Dorset Coast Express to the Swanage branch with run pasts at Corfe Castle and a double header out of Weymouth, 4498 Sir Nigel Gresley ran to Bournemouth and Salisbury and met a Bulleid unrebuilt pacific.

Both tours are covered in great detail with cameramen on the train and by the lineside; it was a fine summer.

All the previous volumes in this series from January 1966 to April 1967 detailing virtually everything that happened on the Southern Region at this time are and all are in glorious colour.

Approx. 60 minutes.
