B&R .62 Dvd: Steam Through the Cotswolds

The Jim Clemens Collection - Volume 1.

The Cathedrals Express.

This is the first volume from an archive film collection of the late Jim Clemens of Worcester.

It is a superb compilation of a journey covering the route of the famous Cathedrals Express from Paddington to Worcester and Hereford.

Filmed between 1959 and 1964, when ex-GWR Castles worked the ‘Cathedrals Express’.

Filmed from the footplate and lineside, the route is covered in detail showing the various types of traffic as wells as the expresses, pick-up freights, fruit trains and oil trains, all steam hauled with Prairie tanks, Moguls, 22xx, 28xx and 9F classes.

There are Castles, Halls and Granges with King and an ex-GWR railcar putting in an appearance.

Branch lines along the route are also visited such as Newbury to Didcot, Oxford to Fairford, Moreton to Shipston-on-Stour lines, Kingham to Notgrove, Newbury to Didcot, Chipping Norton and Stow-on-the-Wold .

Bromyard line and of course the Vinegar line at Worcester, are covered in detail.

At Worcester we take a look at the ‘Vinegar’ branch and the Kidderminster portion of the Cathedrals Express.

On to Hereford with that portion viewing all stations and visiting the Bromyard branch, before Malvern and Ledbury and an arrival at Hereford.

Castles abound of course with a little footplate running thrown in.

There are Halls, Granges, Manor, 53xx, 28xx, 22xx, 4lxx and Panniers.

A King appears at Princes Risborough and a GWR Railcar at Ledbury.

This is pure detail on a route not seen on video before in its entirety.

This is a feast of steam as it was on the Western Region in the 1960s, all in colour except the Shipston-on-Stour branch and all archive film with no modern day footage.

Approx. 60 minutes.
